My name is Bill Barr, retired from Ford Engine Engineering. Starting in the fall of 1962 I was the Dynamometer Development/Test Engineer for the 1963 Indianapolis pushrod engine and then one of the five engineers in the Indy Engine Group for the 1964 DOHC engine. The 1964 group included a supervisor, a principal engineer, five design engineers, and a Dynamometer Coordinator. The 1965 Indy Engine Group expanded by one engineer. After the 1965 race for which 50 "production" race engines were built and sold (and Jim Clark won the 1965 Indy 500 race), the Indy Race Group was disbanded and personnel were dispersed to other engine engineering projects.

Greylisting and Blocked Visitors

There are a lot of bad actors in the world who crawl web sites looking to harvest email addresses for spammers, or to inject bogus links to spam and malware sites. One of the ways I try to combat that behavior is by using a service that keeps track of known miscreants and automatically prevents them from accessing this site. The IP address of every site visitor is checked against a database, and if your address is associated with some suspicious activity you will be asked to take an extra authentication step before you'll be given access to the site. This process is called "greylisting". If you follow the directions and complete the extra step your address will be "whitelisted" and you'll be good to go.

The service provides a web interface that you can use to search for your IP address if you want to see the type of activity that's been associated with your IP address. Please keep in mind that the information you see may have nothing to do with you. It may well describe the behavior of someone else that has used the same IP address in the past.

Display Issues with Internet Explorer 8

UPDATE: I've been able to install a work-around for the page width display issue. If you still have display issues please contact me (Scott) to let me know what you're seeing. It would help if you can have a picture of your screen ready to share.

This web site is supposed to be displayed using the full width of your web browser and display terminal. It's displayed properly with the Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer version 9 web browsers, but IE 8 (and maybe earlier versions) compresses the display away from the edges. That's a bug in the browser. Please upgrade to IE 9 or try another browser if the compressed display is a problem for you.

Failed User Logins

One of the nice new features of the site is that it keeps a log of error messages, such as when a user tries to login and fails. I can see that some people have tried to login (in an attempt to comment on an article perhaps?) and failed. I don't yet have user accounts set up for login, so please, don't bother trying to login - you can't. In the not too distant future I hope to have things set up so that you can use the same user account on this part of the site, the forum, and the gallery, but I'm not there yet. When I have it working you'll be able to comment on articles, keep track of the vehicles you've registered, and more.
